Computational Framing Analysis
Framing is the deliberate presentation of information to shape how an audience responds. Frames have mostly been studied through manual coding of small datasets, which cannot keep up with the volume of online news and social media.
After surveying computational approaches to framing, we developed Semantic-based Unsupervised Framing Analysis (SUFA), which uses the semantic relations among entities in a story to identify framing patterns at scale. SUFA won the Top Method Paper award in the Communication Theory and Methodology Division at AEJMC 2023.
