Join the lab

We work where computer science, journalism and information science meet. Here is how students can get involved.

Funding. I'm not able to offer funded research assistantships at this time.

Prospective Ph.D. students

I advise Ph.D. students in the Philip Merrill College of Journalism and the College of Information. Apply to one of those programs and name the lab in your application.

UMD undergraduate and master's students

Research for course credit is possible and arranged case by case. Past undergraduates have co-authored papers, including at CHI. See where our alumni went.

Questions we want to pursue next

  • Explainable large language models for health communication
  • AI in newsrooms and audience engagement
  • Narratives in ethnic and international media
  • Bangla and multilingual language processing
  • Misleading headlines and video

Our research projects show where this work comes from.

How we work

We meet weekly, or occasionally every two weeks, on Zoom or in person. I expect discipline, self-motivation and curiosity.
